Sample Curriculum
Phase 1:
- Introduction to Guitar terminology, including parts of the guitar such as frets and string numbers
- Tuning the guitar
- Picking technique
- Introduction to tablature
- Note fretting techniques and playing simple, familiar melodies using tablature.
- Names of the notes on the fretboard
- Open chords (C, G, D, Am, D7)
- Basic rhythm and meter such as counting 4/4 and 3/4 time
- Counting eight notes
- Simple strumming pattens
- Applying techniques to strum simple songs and play simple melodies.
Phase 2:
- More open chords as well as bar chords and power chords
- Arpegio patterns
- Counting sixteenth notes
- Playing simple leads
- Additional time signatures
- Applying all techniques to date to learn more complex songs from start to finish using printed music sources
Phase 3:
- More personalized instruction in the student preferred genre
- New techniques such as fingerstyle playing, improvisation with scales and modes, jazz chords etc
- The focus at this stage is to begin to develop the students specialization with material in their preferred style, integrating and expanding on new techniques as necessary.
